Gotcha! - Partner (Orange Israel) got us... once

The mobile operator Partners (running the Orange franchise in Israel) got us recently in a classic mobile phone "Gotcha" case. Exceeding your international data plan without you knowing it and then charging you an obscene amount of money. We did not argue, scream, or complain, just asked whether this really was the correct bill. "Yes" was the answer. Guess what? We switched to an operator that offered us a great international calling plan. I do not understand the business logic of pricing for Gotcha opportunities (remember, I have been a strategy consultant for 17 years). They got their money, they lost a lifetime client.

Tricking your iPhone/gmail into using a different recipient address

Gmail has very powerful settings to change the "@gmail.com" email address into something more personal. Somehow, it has proven difficult to get this to work on my iPhone. Here is the trick to get it to work:

  1. In your email settings, set up an account, but NOT using the gmail option, use "other" instead, follow these instructions: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=77702
  2. Now here comes the trick: when you are all done, go back into these same settings and change the email address to the address you want to use.

For some reason if you set this email address in the first step, it does not work. So first set it up according the standard way, then - hack - tweak it a little bit.
